Stanly County Concert Band

A John Williams Tribute

Saturday, November 16, 2013 7:30 PM

American community bands are as old as the US.  The German roots of the Moravian settlers were especially instrumental in starting bands in Pennsylvania and North Carolina.  These bands offered secular and religious music usually in town parks and most often for holidays such as Christmas, Fourth of July, Memorial Day, etc.  The true definition of a community band is an ensemble of amateur and professional musicians, playing brass, wind and percussion instruments for local audiences and personal enjoyment.  The Stanly County Community Band was formed in May 2012 as a collaborative effort between local musicians and the Pfeiffer University Wind Ensemble.  Carmella Hedrick, Director of the Pfeiffer Wind Ensemble, the late Dr. David Kirby, Director of the Pfeiffer Instrumental Music, Tim Hedrick & Doug Craig, retired band directors in Stanly Count Schools, Frank Poolos, Walt Summerlin, James Cotton and Stephanie Marotto were Charter Board Members.  As a nonprofit organization, the mission is to provide lifelong participation in music to enhance the cultural life of Stanly County.  The thirty-five members range from college music majors and professors, church music leaders, to school band directors.  Also, many members of the community, who do not make a living through music, but have dusted off those high school and college instruments and are once again enjoying a life-long passion!  Anyone eighteen and older is eligible to join.  Band members serve as directors and each selects compositions to perform.  These include everything from military marches to movie/TV scores.  November 16th the band will perform the music of John Williams, the master of film themes like E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, Empire of the Sun, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Harry Potter, Lincoln, and over 125 more films.  He also composed the themes for four Olympic Games.    Stanly County is so fortunate to have the Community Band whose members are dedicated to weekly practices and bringing music to our citizens.

A real “jewel” in our own backyard!
