The Malpass Brothers

These guys don’t just sound retro---they are retro!”  This is just one review for the traditional country and gospel music of The Malpass Brothers.

Christopher and Taylor Malpass grew up with music and their talents were discovered very early in life.  Chris first performed at the Wayne County Fair talent show when he was seven.  His parents took him to North Myrtle Beach in 1996 to audition for the Alabama Theater Christmas Show.  Chris’ singing and guitar playing landed him a part.  Although the Alabama Theater wanted Chris full-time, the family couldn’t travel from Goldsboro to North Myrtle Beach every week.  In 1999 brother Taylor decided he wanted a mandolin.  With no former interest in music, Mom and Dad Malpass made Taylor save his money to purchase his mandolin.  He did and within a week was playing and singing harmony with brother Chris.  Dad decided he might as well add his bass talents and find additional musicians for a real band since he and Mom were driving the boys to engagements around the state.  The band performed at MerleFest where Susan Foster learned of Chris’ admiration for Merle Haggard and arranged for them to open for him at Isothermal Community College in Spindale, NC.  Chris and Merle immediately bonded and Chris was soon opening for Merle all over the country.  Taylor joined the entourage after graduating from high school.  The entire family band is now back home in Wayne County performing and touring throughout the US.  They have also performed in Northern Ireland and the Shetland Islands.  The Malpass Brothers have produced three CDs and are beginning a fourth.  How wonderful to know the music of Mel Tillis, Waylon Jennings, Ernest Tubb, Willie Nelson, Elvis, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash plus others is preserved for future generations.
