The Steely Pan Steel Band

Saturday, April 17, 2010 7:30 PM

(Dinner Concert)

Dr. Scott Meister, professor of percussion at Appalachian State University, is the master-mind behind The Steely Pan Steel Band.  In 1985 with donated 55 gallon orange juice barrels and the help of Pete Seeger’s book on drum making and Jon Nedd, an ASU soccer star from Trinidad and  ten and twelve pound sledgehammers the first crude drums were grooved, shaped, and “fired” to create the unique Caribbean sounds.  Today with over 20 students and 40 pans made by world professionals, drum set and percussions Steely Pan tours all over NC, the Southeast and has traveled to Hawaii in 2001 and 2003 and performed on Caribbean cruises.  Their unique sounds include pop/rock, classic, Appalachian Mountain,  popular and of course Calypso!  2010 celebrates the twenty-fifth anniversary of Steely Pan Steel Band with the release of a fifth CD.  Steely Pan is definitely the “star” in ASU’s crown!
